Roxanne Bland grew up in Washington, D.C., and has been a fugitive from reality since she was a child. As a child, she constantly created stories—some would call them lies—about her family, friends, neighbors and even strangers on the street.
Learning to read was a revelation for Ms. Bland. Words fascinated her. Whole new worlds opened up, and since her parents forbade nothing, she read everything. Some of it she didn’t quite understand, but she read it anyway. She even read the dictionary.
As a teen, though she continued to create stories in her mind, competing life interests compelled Ms. Bland to put down her pen. It wasn’t until after graduate school that she began penning stories again, short stories that she wrote mainly for her own amusement. She began writing for the amusement of others in 2001.
