Talinda sat there motionless in a fog of disbelief, as the ambulance attendants tried feverously to revive her husband’s lifeless body. They had arrived five minutes too late. This was the man of her dreams. Could this really be happening? They had been happily married for seven years. She was going to tell him she was expecting their second child tonight after they got home from the church’s youth meeting with a chilled bottle of sparkling cider to celebrate. But instead she yelled it to him in desperation as he lay in her arms dying. It was a futile effort to give him inspiration to fi ght for life. He would have been so excited, they had been so afraid to try again, and in fact weren’t trying now. Their first child, a beautiful baby girl they named Lydia, had been still born five years earlier. Since that night, Talinda had been barren. They had decided to let God decide when and if she would conceive again, therefore used no form of birth control, and just waited on God for the right time. Her mind drifted back to their first encounter . . . .
