Yvelette’s Bio:
Yvelette Stines is a dyslexic dreamer who has found her passion through the written word. Always having a dream of becoming a writer, she was encouraged to take the “safe” path in life until 2006 when the safety net broke and she was determined to live her dream. That year, law school was no longer an option. She realized that it would be pointless to spend all those years daydreaming about becoming a writer and never actually do it. It was a bitter cold day in January, she made an announcement that she would be published in a magazine by the end of the year. The responses from others were mixed messages of support, discouragement and laughter. The response in her heart was to push forward. In December 2006, her first magazine article was published in Atlanta Life Magazine. Stines now writes about health, wellness, beauty, business, entertainment and education. With one goal down there were many more to accomplish. She has written for Essence, Heart and Soul, Uptown, Ambassador, Black Health, SheKnows.com, CentricTV, Jones Magazine, Hispanic Executive Quarterly, Green Build and Design, Michigan Front Page and Detroit Fashion Pages, just to name a few. Stines has written copy for business, biographies for many individuals including Free the first host of 106 and Park. Along with writing Stines has edited literary journals, books and she was also the contributing assistant editor for Jones Magazine Spring 2011 issue. Stines has interviewed many influential individuals such as Dr.OZ, Dr. Ian Smith, Jalen Rose, Jeanette Jenkins, MC Lyte, Junot Diaz, Edwidge Danticat, Trisha R. Thomas, Chris-Tia Donaldson, Kimberly Seals-Allers, Marie Mutsuki Mockett, Paula Tutman, Mitzi Miller, Suheir Hammad, Sharon “Umi” Smith (Mos Def’s Mother), Sam Fine, AJ Crimson, Shelley Davis, Natalia Rose, Alissa Cohen and Kim Coles just to name a few. In her journalistic journey Stines has covered many events such as New York Fashion Week. Stines has studied writing with Terry McMillan, Ruth Forman, Victoria R. Rowan and Linda Formechelli. She has also given lectures about writing, dyslexia and blogging. She was the keynote speaker at the Academy of Arts and Sciences Special Education Dinner, where she spoke about her personal experience and the positive side of dyslexia which was the basis of her thesis: How to Understand and Recognize the Dyslexic Child in the Regular Classroom. She spoke about blogging at the P.O.W.E.R. Organization Math and Technology event. She also spoke at the Blogging While Brown Conference in Los Angeles California about keeping an authentic voice through writing and blogging. Stines recently published her first book Vernon the Vegetable Man, it is a children’s book that encourages a healthy lifestyle through exercise and eating. Stines hold a B.A. in Communications from the University of Detroit Mercy, a M.S. in Holistic Nutrition and M.Ed in Education from Cambridge College. She is a raw food coach, educator, and chef.
